Squash End of Season Review 2018

Squash End of Season Review 2018.

All,

I attended the squash AGM tonight all be it a bit late and I know Steve said a few words about how the season went on my/our. I would like to add to it by saying this.......

Last season we saw the emergence of a new first team. A very promising team that hopefully can stay together and improve over the next few years. After previously winning promotion to the 2nd division we we’re unfortunately relegated by 16 points, but not for the want of trying and not without some very good performances.............. we lost a few games that could of gone either way and would have told a different story as we got towards the end of the season. Losing Alex Berry hurt us but that gave Jon Fell a chance to come in and prove what a good player he is and is going to be over the coming years.
Being far too good for the 3rd Division I expect a swift return. We pushed all the way to the last match and relegation was only confirmed after the final match.
I know in the past we’ve stayed up on a request to the league so maybe that’s a possibility.

THE FUTURE IS BRIGHT.

Most other teams had average seasons really by our standards.

2nd team were steady and finished mid table, winning more games than they lost.

3rd team, in a very tough league stayed up. No teams were relegated due to Heswall 3 dropping out at the start of the season but we stayed up anyway.

4ths probably had the worst of it being in the 3rd division and with an ever changing team only managed 1 win. It did however give a few players a taste of the 3rd division and how difficult it is which is always a good experience in my opinion even if you lose.

5ths finished towards the bottom end of the table but survived.

6ths had a very difficult season and fielding a team week in week out was very difficult. I really had to work hard each week to get 5 players out there. We managed 5 wins and in the circumstances that was Very good. It gave two of our juniors the chance to experience Men’s Squash for the first time and they will only get better.

We have some great young talent coming through and hopefully, through the work of Jim and the junior section, that can continue.

One thing that seems to be more obvious than ever is our current lack of players available for regular selection. I’d say we lost twice as many players as we had new players coming into the teams at the start of the season and it looks the same next season. We do have a few players coming back from injury that will help

As most of you are aware I’ve stepped down as squash captain. After the birth of our new arrival Martha I quickly began to realise that next season I won’t be able to give the captaincy my all and for that reason I’m calling it a day after one season.
Mr Kyriacou has agreed to step in a year early. I thank him for that and of course wish him and his Vice Captain Jon Fell all the best for next season.
Can I request that everyone gets behind them as much as possible because it’s a thankless task and any help along the way is much appreciated.

It’s a huge job that isn’t to be underestimated and takes a massive effort each week. A bigger effort than I probably ever gave it credit for. One that takes many hours of personal time.

I would also like to say a personal thanks our Chairman Ade for helping me out throughout the year. As I said at the AGM the help was appreciated and much needed.

With regards to the club comps and trophies.
Matt Davies won the Open,
Mick Henderson won the Over 45’s and Chris Clarke won the Plate.
Jack Riley won the Handicap Tournament
Ade Taiwo won the Geoff Hilton
Steve Wildgoose won the Joe Ling

We still have some outstanding money from the comps and I’ve posted a list on the squash WhatsApp of who has and hasn’t paid and paid what I had collected to Mark Murray at tonight’s AGM. I’ve also attached the list below.

Kind Regards and thanks to all who helped me out during the season.

Colin Rogers
